Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation (LTDC), in collaboration with Southern Express, launched the celebration of World Tourism Day with an exhibition at the Botha-Bothe Comfort Facility, in Butha-Buthe district.
World Tourism Day is marked on September 27 each year, and has been celebrated since 1980 to promote awareness on the importance of tourism. The aim of an exhibition was for tourism enterprises to meet, network and showcase their products under one roof to create job opportunities.
Annually the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) decides the theme, and this year the theme for the day is: “Tourism for inclusive growth”.
Speaking at the launch Prime Minister Moeketsi Majoro urged the nation to make a living out of tourism noting, however, that the biggest problem is investment funding in the tourism sector and knowledge to identify tourist attractions.
“When we ask why some tourists do not come to Lesotho, they say some of our hospitality places are not up to standard, and those that are up to standard to not have enough space, that says we still have a lot to do to improve our tourism sector,” he said.
On behalf of Lesotho Hotels and Hospitality Association LHHA, Lehlohonolo Lelimo, from the Afriski Resort, said tourism has been depressed from 2020 due Covid-19.
This year there has been a slight improvement and he believes if all hospitalities and tourist attractions unite and work together they will take tourism to greater heights.
“We encourage Basotho to visit local places first before taking money abroad because tourism adds to the economy of the country.
We are thankful to Southern Express for funding this event; we are looking forward to seeing more events being hosted at the Botha-Bothe Visitors Comfort Facility,” said LTDC Chief Executive Officer, Sehlabaka Ramafikeng.
With tourism regarded as one of the major contributing sectors to the country’s economic growth and job creation, LTDC provides leadership in the development of a strong and vibrant tourism industry which contributes to sustainable economic growth, job creation, poverty alleviation and protection of the natural environment. It is mandated to market Lesotho as a preferred destination for tourists.
