Lesotho Town and Regional Planning Institute (LTRPI) celebrated International Urban Planning Day on Thursday LTRPI Speaker Mr Teboho Lebusa, speaking at a press conference on the occasion, explained, “LTRPI was officially established in 2015, with the aim of aligning it with the plans that are being made in urban and remote areas.

He further pointed out that plans must be put in place to ensure quality services to meet the needs of the community, saying that to ensure that the proper use of land in the country is in line with the law.

He also pointed out that the day is important because it opens up opportunities and encourages the development of strategies to combat the food shortages brought about by the provision of good land that can be used for agricultural purposes.

He said there was a need to strengthen the ‘urban planning laws’ of 1980 and to implement, modify and make adjustments where there were exceptions. He also explained that Lesotho has 12 areas that the country needs to plan, but only 10 improvements appear.

He encouraged the co-operation of the relevant government departments and Land Administration Authority (LAA) institutions as well as the Maseru City Council (MCC) to assist in national planning.

The governor pointed out that the Government through the Ministry of Local Government and Traditional Affairs must work hard to ensure land management, including in the suburbs.

“Rural development should be provided to provide quality housing for Basotho in well-planned areas.

” He pointed out that Lesotho seems to be the main reason for the high turnout in urban areas because in rural areas there are no improvements.
