Maseru, Feb. 12 — The long awaited medication for lumpy skin disease is now available and has been distributed across the country.
This was revealed by the Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition Mr. Thabo Mofosi at the press conference held in Maseru on Thursday.
Mr. Mofosi said the medication is in a form of antibiotics not vaccine and will be offered free of charge, saying infected animals will be given medication at their homes unlike accessing it at certain centres to avoid spread of the disease.
He stated that the medication was delayed due to South African factories which closed for Christmas holidays and orders from other countries as the disease has hit all Southern African countries.
He also disclosed that at least 1061 verified cases have been reported countrywide although verification is continuing in other areas, adding that at least 63 cattle have died to date.
However, he said the rate of infection has reduced although the districts which were not affected have reported new cases.
Meanwhile, the Ministry earlier indicated that lumpy skin disease infects cattle and water buffalos and is caused by a virus, which is spread by mosquitoes from one infected animal to another as well as through direct contact although chances of infection are low.
In addition, it was revealed that there is no specific cure for this disease as it’s a viral infection but could be treated by medication which boosts the immune system.
The Ministry therefore urged farmers to isolate infected cattle from others, and ensure those infected are kept in shaded environments, be given food and water and should not be used for any form of work.
