Africa-Press – Lesotho. THEY fired 10 shots at him, but they all missed the target and he survived the ordeal. Then they went for him again. His crime? Khanyane Makailane, 34, from Ha-Lejone in Leribe, had allegedly hired a hitman to kill one Pitsi Mojammuso on suspicion that he had stolen his cattle earlier last week.

The suspected hitman, Tsietsi Thabang Mosiuoa, was arrested and granted bail in the Northern Region High Court in Tšifa-li-Mali last week for the murder of Mojammuso. He paid the bail and went home.

The investigating officer, Police Constable Puseletso Khetsi, says she received a report last Saturday that three armed men had attacked Makailane and that he had survived the shooting.

“I was informed that they found about 10 shells on the ground,” PC Khetsi said.

She said she ordered Makailane and his brother, Nteka Lehoere Makailane who is the village chief, to collect the shells and hand them over to the police.

“The aim of that order was to get Khanyane (Makailane) arrested immediately as he handed over the shells to the police because he was a suspect in the murder of Pitsi (Mojammuso),” she said.

PC Khetsi said since she was still busy with the local government elections, she called the chief to ask if Makailane had gone to the police and the chief said yes.

“I learned later that the chief was lying to me as Khanyane had met his death on his way to the councillor’s house to wait for the results of the elections,” she said.

She said it was around 8pm when she got a call that Makailane had just been shot and had died on the spot. “I rushed to the scene and on arrival, I found him lying on the ground and next to him were about 11 shells and one led,” she said. PC Khetsi said she believed that this was a revenge attack for Mojammuso’s murder.
