MAPHOTONG COMMUNITY ALLEGES ROOIKAT KILLING LIVESTOCK

Maseru, Feb.02—Maphotong community in Roma is living in fear of the safety of their livestock as they allege that there is Rooikat killing and eating their small stock.

Rooikat, a member of the Caracal branch of the cat family, covers vast territory as an efficient hunter. For the past week it is claimed that it has killed about four lambs.

Speaking in an interview Area Chief Mashapha Lephoto said in the past about two decades ago, this Rooikat preyed on the small stock and killed some though he cannot remember how many but he said it disappeared until it reappeared now.

He said he has not seen it but herd boys claim to have seen it saying this has forced them to be vigilant and not leave the side of livestock when grazing. He said the presence of animals like Rooikat could be exacerbated by the lots of trees surrounding their area.

Moreover, he said despite the essential significance of trees to the environment, as well as providing wood to the community, he fears that these trees could in turn pose danger to them.

He therefore called for help with provision of herbicides to kill trees after cutting them down so that they do not re-grow.

Meanwhile efforts to speak to the Ministry of Forestry regarding the matter were futile.

Reports show that trees are essential for maintaining air quality, regulating climate, supporting biodiversity, conserving soil and enhancing human health. Protecting and planting trees is crucial for a sustainable future as their loss would have catastrophic consequences for ecosystem and human life alike.
