Africa-Press – Lesotho. Lesotho Science and Mathematics Teachers Association (LSMTA), in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology, hosted a National Science fair on Tuesday. Maseru district topped all other districts with a total of 77 points accumulated.

Leribe came second with 59 points, Berea position three with 21 points, Mohale ‘s Hoek position four with 12 points, Mafeteng position five with 10 points, Mokhotlong position six with 5 points, Thaba-Tseka position seven at 4 points followed by Qacha’s Nek and Quthing both at position eight with only 1 point.

Nine districts of Lesotho through both their high and primary schools participated in the 2-days science fair that was held at the Lesotho College of Education.

Unfortunately, Butha-Buthe became did not participate in the competition. The fair ended with an award-giving ceremony where both teachers and students were given awards for best projects and performances.

LSMTA Public Relations Officer (PRO) Keketso Lebeta got an award for excellence and one for diligence. He said all his efforts in the LSMTA are driven by his love for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects. This competition was aimed to equip students with investigative skills through scientific methods to solvreal-lifefe problems.

The science fair was divided into six categories which are Working Model, Electronics, Technology, Mathematics, Environment and Research and collection, the winners from the national level transit will compete at the international science fair called Eskom Expo for young scientists.

LSMTA Judge Coordinator Mokiti Janefeke said all participants put on a tough competition, which made it difficult to choose the winners, he said education, from primary level, is becoming more and more innovative and inclusive if STEM subjects due to the new curriculum.

However, Janefeke said technology, electronic and mathematics had less projects and participants, he said it could be that some teachers still do not know how to introduce these projects to students.

He still thinks the new curriculum in primary level is yet to work wonders because this is the 1st science fair post COVID pandemic hence some students were not prepared.
