Africa-PressLesotho. Local insurance company Metropolitan Lesotho becomes the first to be headed by a woman in the life insurance space. After the former Managing Director (MD) Nkau

Matete left the recently, the company has acted swiftly to replace him with Mamello Phomane who had been acting in that position since Matete’s departure.

By so doing the company became the first in the life insurance fraternity to deploy a woman in that top position. It is also the first time the company is

led by a woman locally. This historic feat arguably marks yet another milestone in the women empowerment strive as cooperatives and all other sectors are gearing towards entrusting women for leadership roles.

Phomane has expressed her gratitude for the opportunity and is also relishing the new challenge. “I am proud and humbled by the confidence the board has in me.

As much as it is good for women empowerment because I am a woman, I don’t think I was chosen merely because I am a woman but rather because I was seen as the most competent candidate for the position and well

deserving. This company is good at investing in its employees and I am one typical example. It has invested a lot in me, grooming me towards becoming a leader and here I am today.

I have a huge responsibility on my shoulder and I am ready to hit the ground running,” said Phomane. She will without a doubt have no difficulty in finding her feet in her new position as she is no stranger to the company.

She boasts a 15 year experience having been at the company since 2004, heading different departments. Soon as she assumes office her primary target area is clients’ experience from the entry point throughout the entire process.

This she says she will undertake because the company relies mainly on its clients to thrive and therefore they should always be satisfied with the services offered.

“My aim is to pick momentum from where Ntate Matete left off because he did a fantastic

job, I must admit. He left this company in a financially sound state and all I have to do is built on his legacy and take the company forward,” she stated.

She is adamant that there will be a bit of pressure on her shoulders in this new position because she is a woman – the first in this position for that matter. However, she is confident that she has all under control and will manage to focus on what she is entrusted to do.
