MINISTRY PRESENTS ICT EQUIPMENT TO SCHOOLS

Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Ministry of Education and Training on Wednesday handed over laptops, mouse, flash and solar panels with inverters to 245 Science and Mathematics teachers from 69 schools across the country at an event held in Maseru.

The event also included training for the said teachers on the use of the equipment. The said gadgets have been given to the least performing schools both in urban and rural areas.

In his remarks, Minister of Education and Training, Prof. Ntoi Rapapa said the equipment, the solar panels and inverters, have been given to schools with no electricity so that they can charge the laptops.

He said in Lesotho’s history, this is the first time that about M30 million has been set aside for training Science and Maths teachers, saying it is a great achievement.

He said Science teachers in Lesotho are much challenged since they do not have resources, saying he hopes this equipment will help them and encourage students to love Science and Maths.

He said it is expected that going forward the teachers and their schools will improve, remarking that Science and Maths teachers are the future of this country.

He urged them to be exemplary to other teachers in their schools and explain the danger of drug and substance abuse to students so that they would refrain from such behaviour while at the same time ensuring that such students get help.

On the other hand, the Lesotho Science and Mathematics Teachers Association (LSMTA) President, Mr. Keketso Leteba said they are thankful as the Minister was once a Maths and Science teacher and this makes it easy for him to understand their needs.

He said they are honoured to be part of the project, saying they highly appreciate the efforts the ministry is making to develop education in this country.

He commented that they teach in the 21st century where technology supersedes everything but most of their schools do not have Science laboratories which does not make it easy for them to do their work, saying with these gadgets and capacitation they are going to get, they believe it will be easy to bring reality into their classes.

He therefore promised that they will take care of the equipment and use it accordingly for the benefit of Science and Maths, expressing hope that in future all Science and Maths teachers will have the gadgets and be capacitated as well. Reports show that Mathematics and Science education is vital for any nation to realise meaningful economic development.
