Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation (LTDC) is of the positive view that the upcoming Moshoeshoe Walk will be low-hanging fruit to the tourism industry.
The tourism industry is one of the worst affected by the COVID-19 sponsoring measures that the country imposed to curb the spread of the pandemic. With the
ease of pandemic restrictions, more social and economic activities that were prohibited have resumed. LTDC is a government agency charged with the mandate to promote tourism activities in
the country and support the sector. LTDC Public Relations (PR) Manager ‘Manchafalo Motšoeneng said the walk is one of the “major drivers of tourism development”.
“In our view, Moshoeshoe Walk is one event that we see as a catalyst in our drive to
rebuilt tourism in the midst of Covid-19 and its negative effects the industry suffered. The event attracts visitors from different parts of southern Africa
and beyond as well as domestic travellers thus igniting local travel and attracting international travellers. “It also promotes local communities’ participation in tourism development since
locals along the route engage in small tourism businesses to generate income (sale of souvenirs, food, and services),” she said. The LTDC PR Manager further pointed out that the Walk has since grown in leaps and
bounds, adding that it will attract more participants owing to the eased COVID-19 restrictions which have allowed more social and economic activities to
take place. Motšoeneng highlighted that with the relaxation of the COVID-19 rules, many people are “excited to travel and explore Lesotho to unwind and relax”.
She added: “Moshoeshoe Walk offers an experience of a lifetime. LTDC supports this initiative in a number of ways to ensure its success. ” Meanwhile, Thabo Maretlane, Managing Director at T.
Connexion Travel and Tours, a company that organises this event, said they are amped to commerce, adding that they are now “putting finishing touches” on the logistics.
Moshoeshoe Walk is an annual three-day event that was organized since 2007. It had attracted the participation of their Majesties King Letsie III and Queen
‘Masenate Mohato Seeiso, the Ambassadors and High Commission delegates in Lesotho, trekkers from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region and overseas. The
three days trekking is about reflection on the life and leadership traits of the founder of the Basotho nation King Moshoeshoe I and Basotho nation. The
Basotho nation founder is celebrated for his leadership qualities and as a “unifier” of the once scattered people into a nation as well as the lover of
peace. This year’s instalment of the Walk is expected to commence from 10 to 12 March. Vistilesotho. travel website captures Lesotho as “the magical mountain kingdom … [and] one of
Africa’s most intriguing and rewarding off-the-beaten-track gems. A land of intoxication heights and exiting extremes, it is set entirely above 1, 388
meters [above the sea level], the highest low point of any country in the world, while the 3, 482-metre summit of Thabana Ntlenyana stands as Africa’s loftiest peak south of Kilimanjaro.”
