Africa-Press – Lesotho. A Mosotho artisan has turned the traditional Mokorotlo hat into a source of livelihood, using her craft to support her family and preserve Basotho culture.
In an interview with the Agency, Ms. Maleshoane Litabe said making and selling Mokorotlo hats has helped her raise her children and sustain her household over the years.
She explained that she began the business many years ago when her eldest son, who is now 29 years old, was just two years old.
Ms. Litabe said the business performs best when there are tourists visiting the country, as many of them show interest in buying traditional Basotho products as souvenirs.
She added that through selling the hats she has been able to provide for her children and meet some of the family’s daily needs.
However, Ms. Litabe noted that the business also faces several challenges. One of the major difficulties, she said, is the lack of a consistent market for traditional products.
“The challenge is that sometimes there is no market for our products, especially when there are fewer visitors,” she explained.
She further indicated that bad weather conditions also affect their work, as artisans often rely on suitable weather to produce and sell their crafts.
Despite the challenges, Ms. Litabe continues to make Mokorotlo hats, saying the craft is not only a means of survival but also an important way of preserving Basotho heritage.
