Africa-Press – Lesotho. Lesotho’s United States-based tennis star Nyathi Motlojoa continues to shine in the US after qualifying for the Rivers Individual National Championships, which will take place in Chattanooga, Tennessee in two weeks’ time.
Motlojoa, 21, and his doubles partner Cole Schneider from Luther College booked a slot at the Individual Championships after dominating the men’s doubles category during the American Rivers National Championship against Kalamazoo College last weekend.
This was after Motlojoa inspired his Luther College team to the American Rivers National Championship three weeks ago, having won seven singles out of eight and all eight doubles as his team dominated a 10-team conference.
Motlojoa repeated a fine run in doubles alongside Schneider last weekend. “I won my doubles match 8-0 and lost my singles match 2-6, 1-6,” said Motlojoa in an interview with Public Eye on Tuesday this week.
“Overall, my team lost 5-1 (to Kalamazoo College).
” In singles, Motlojoa lost to a Kalamazoo College player, Iaan Yi.
“It was a fun and challenging match. However, we did not come out victorious.
“It was a learning curve and also a good experience for the team to know we can go back again next season and do even better with more preparation.
” Motlojoa further said: “I also qualified for the Individual Championships. My doubles partner and I will be travelling to Chattanooga in Tennessee in two weeks’ time to compete with the best doubles pairs in the nation. ”
Motlojoa went to the US in 2018 through a tennis scholarship to study and play tennis. He emulated his elder brother Kukutla who went to the US four years before him, also through the same tennis scholarship, to study at the New Mexico Military Institution while also playing tennis.
The two players’ father Retšelisitsoe Motlojoa is also a former tennis player. The Motlojoa brothers are not the only Lesotho-born tennis players who relocated to the US, Lebelo Mosehle likewise got a tennis scholarship to study and play in America before the two. Mosehle has since finished his studies in the US and he now runs a tennis academy in America.
