Africa-Press – Lesotho. His Majesty King Letsie III has bestowed the honour and dignity of the King’s Counsel (KC) to the Attorney-General (AG) Advocate Rapelang Motsieloa. These developments unfolded on Friday at the Royal Palace Grounds at a ceremony held in celebration of his 59th birthday.
The coveted and prestigious legal title of the KC is set out under the Legal Practitioners Act, 1983. According to this Act, the King may confer the KC to the lawyers who have distinguished themselves in the legal practice acting upon the Chief Justice’s recommendation.
For the holder of the AG’s office, the section 7 (2) of the Legal Practitioners Act, 1983 reads “The First Law Officer of the Crown shall automatically receive the honour and dignity of King’s Counsel on appointment.

“(2) The First Law Officer of the Crown shall take precedence over all King’s Crown Counsel, and all the King’s Counsel shall take precedence over each other by the respective dates of their admissions.
Advocate Motsieloa KC assumed the AG’s position in June 2021 filling the shoes of the then AG, Advocate Haae Phoofolo KC after the end of his contract earlier that year. The AG serves as a legal advisor to the government.

Amongst other functions, the AG sits in the Cabinet meetings where he advises the Executive on legal issues, he is a member of the Council of State, a body tasked with the mandate to advise the King in the execution of His duties and is also a member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
At the same occasion, the King presented awards and medals to the members of security institutions, Lesotho Defence Force (LDF), Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) and the Lesotho Correctional Services (LCS). The awards and medals were in the following three categories: 30 years of long and loyal service, meritorial service and gallantry awards.
