Africa-Press – Lesotho. An exhibition highlighting construction practices and essential housing services was held on Friday in Maseru, organized by the Department of Housing under the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftainship, Home Affairs, and Police.
While officially opening the event, the Minister of Local Government, Chieftainship, Home Affairs, and Police, Mr. Lebona Lephema, stated that understanding the housing sector is vital for national development. He noted that housing reflects living standards and impacts both the physical and mental well-being of citizens.
He emphasized the importance of affordable, adequate, and sustainable housing that provides privacy, security, structural stability, proper lighting, ventilation, and access to essential infrastructure such as water, sanitation, and waste management.
Mr. Lephema urged stronger collaboration between the government and private sector to address challenges such as high construction costs, limited land access, skill shortages, and inadequate mortgage options for low-income earners. He called for ongoing engagement to improve housing delivery and ensure communities have access to decent living conditions.
On the other hand, the director of Lesotho Housing and Land Development Cooperation, Mrs. Malesekele Matekane, explained that the authority is responsible for implementing land and housing programs in Lesotho.
