Africa-Press – Lesotho. There are some differences between the “South-South and triangular cooperation” with China. The 2025 UN Day theme, “New Opportunities and Innovation through South-South and Triangular Cooperation,” is the first to place “triangular cooperation” explicitly in the headline. There’s a big significance to this shift.

Here comes Chinese President Xi Jinping’s call during the celebration of Global South Day at the United Nations on September 12 to “strengthen multilateralism against American and Western unilateralism and protectionism,” emphasizing the need to build a balanced international system based on mutual respect and shared benefit. The Global Governance Initiative is part of a broader Chinese vision that includes “global development, global security, and global civilization initiatives,” working together to inject stability into a turbulent world within the United Nations and all international forums, with the assistance and support of China from countries in the Global South.

The theme for UN Day 2025 is “South-South and Triangular Cooperation.” This day focuses on the importance of solidarity among countries in the Global South in addressing crises and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, recognizing the role of triangular cooperation in supporting these efforts. South-South Cooperation is a kind of development cooperation between countries in the Global South.

It aims to promote collective self-sufficiency and solidarity among countries in the Global South through the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and successful solutions.

Whereas the (Triangular Cooperation) involves a developed country that supports existing South-South cooperation initiatives. It is considered a partner that supports development solutions led by countries in the South.

Amid the challenges facing developing countries in the Global South, South-South and triangular cooperation emerge as promising and practical paths forward. Built on interdependence and shared expertise, this type of partnership offers practical solutions rooted in local contexts that complement traditional development aid support.

This year’s UN theme, “Promising Opportunities and New Innovations through South-South and Triangular Cooperation,” expresses an urgent call to turn promises into achievements and highlights the growing role of the Global South in addressing shared challenges, from strengthening healthcare systems and adapting to climate change to advancing digital innovation and sustainable finance. This cooperation brings countries together so that decision-makers can share knowledge, disseminate successful experiences, and build more inclusive and equitable partnerships. By harnessing this collective power, we can accelerate progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and building a just and sustainable future.

– Key Priorities of South-South Cooperation for 2025 with China:

1) Sustainable Financing:

Securing stable, long-term financing for South-South cooperation.

2) Resilience and Innovation:

Providing flexible solutions to address overlapping crises through partnerships.

3) Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals:

This cooperation is a critical component of achieving progress on the development path.

4) Development Leadership from the Global South:

The Global South contributes its local expertise and knowledge to reshaping modern development.

4) Tools to Promote Collaboration:

Platforms such as South-South Galaxy and Solution Lab facilitate countries’ exchange of knowledge and scale-up of successful solutions.

5) Importance of this Day:

The United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation, observed on September 12, celebrates economic and social progress in developing countries and encourages countries’ solidarity to achieve a more just and sustainable world.

Accordingly, we understand China’s leading role in the success of the United Nations’ Global South Day on September 12. China and its president, Xi Jinping, have launched numerous global initiatives at a time of increasing geopolitical challenges, reflecting China’s commitment to a responsible leadership role in promoting peace and development within developing countries of the Global South and around the world.
