Africa-Press – Lesotho. THE National Security Service (NSS) has come out guns blazing as it disowned a Facebook account which was being run in its name. The Facebook account, which seems to have been created on March 10 and until July 1, has been vocal in its defence of spy chief, Pheello Ralenkoane, and the NSS.

The page talked about internal operations at the NSS, how it advised the army, Prime Minister Moeketsi Majoro and his Basotho National Party (BNP) on certain things.

This week, the NSS said the account was fake. The spy agency said it was gravely worried by the fake Facebook account under the name ‘National Security Service (NSS)’.

The account bears a profile picture that displays the national flag of Lesotho. The said fake Facebook account mimics the management of the NSS as its official, the agency said in the statement.

It said it wishes to “categorically dissociate itself with any writings, announcements, opinions, utterances and up-loaded media content and recordings that may be streamed on such web page”.

“Therefore, the general public is reminded that the service is entrusted with the mandate of protection of national security,” the statement reads.

“As such, all or any false information spread through the use of several media platforms or broadcast on radio without prior consultation with the NSS, tarnishes the image of the institution.

NSS said all users are urged to desist from following, interacting, commenting and viewing the content of the fake NSS web page over Facebook social media platform so as to minimise chances of otherwise tarnishing the reputation of the real NSS.
