Africa-Press – Lesotho. The owner of Ntséo seedlings and vegetables Ms Palesa Ntséo says the Smallholder Agriculture Development Programme (SADP II) has helped increase their seedling production, as it has enabled them to produce more than five trays, which they used to grow before the funding.
Ms Ntséo stated during Ntséo’s seedlings graduation from the SADP on Friday.
She mentioned that they couldn’t meet their customers’ needs due to having small shade nets; however, thanks to SADP II, they received a large shade net and a plastic tunnel.
According to Ms. Ntséo, after working with SADP II in 2021, it assisted them in producing approximately 1,200 trays of seedlings, helped secure adequate water, and fenced the plot.
She said the main challenge they currently face is the delay in producing seedlings due to cold weather conditions, and she mentioned that if production begins between June and August, the seedlings often do not survive the cold temperatures.
She noted that the water supply can become challenging during droughts. She also urged community members to collaborate on producing seedlings, as they are still unable to meet the demand.
They are currently supplying farmers in Leribe, Maseru, Mokhotlong, and Thaba Tseka, but are still failing to meet the demand, which remains very high.
She said they currently supply cabbage seedlings, tomato, and onion, to mention a few.
At the same event, District Agricultural Officer Ms. Makhala Phalatsi expressed gratitude to the graduand, stating that she should serve as an example. She added that she expects to see many people joining and graduating from SADP.
She urged the youth at the Lilala Resource Centre to take advantage of the projects when introduced in the district, as that can change their lives.
Ms. Phalatsi stated that farmers in the Lilala resource centre are resistant to development. She emphasised that this attitude needs to change, as it could lead to the perception that the government only prioritises urban areas. She pointed out that the farmers often challenge every development proposal brought to their centre.
Chief Libupuoa Ntaote from Pontseng also urged the youth to seize opportunities as new projects arise. He emphasised that the key challenge for the youth is to prioritise financial investment before putting in their effort.
Speaking on behalf of the District Administrator, Mr. Muso Jane advised farmers to participate in seedling production, as there is a high demand for it.
He stated that the extension officers are ready to assist, so there is no reason for any delays in starting this initiative.
Mr. Jane also expressed gratitude to Ntséo Seedlings for pledging to support those interested in seedling production.
Additionally, another SADP graduate, Senawi Poultry, celebrated on Thursday. Senawi Poultry specialises in egg production.
Ntséo seedlings and vegetables is based in Pontséng, Thaba Tseka.
