Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Principal Chief of Mamathe, Sempe Khabasheane Masupha, has declared that no amount of insults or backlash from young people will silence his campaign to ban the sale, use, and distribution of hubbly-bubbly (shisha) in Lesotho.
Speaking boldly in the Senate today, PC Masupha revealed that he has received unexpected insults and ridicule from young people on social media since tabling his motion, but insists that his fight is not against them, rather for their health and future.
“It is clear that many of our youth are under pressure and battling stress, which pushes them towards unhealthy habits. My goal is to address those root causes, not to attack them,” he said.
Some youth have reportedly clapped back, questioning why it is his concern if they smoke, saying “he had his youth,he should let us enjoy ours.” Others argue that smoking hubbly is their only source of relaxation in a stressful economy.
Despite the heat, PC Masupha remains firm: “I will not stop advocating for the well-being of our young people. Together with other stakeholders, we are going to the bottom of this issue.”
The motion to ban hubbly-bubbly use was first tabled in the Senate last week, following growing concerns over its popularity among young Basotho. Senators have warned that hubbly-bubbly smoke contains toxic chemicals and nicotine levels even higher than cigarettes, posing serious risks such as lung disease and heart complications.
