Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) warned Basotho to stop going to Maputsoe to “import” illicit tobacco. In a statement on social media, LMPS said, “There is no place that produces and sells tobacco in Maputsoe.
” Police have received several reports of Basotho falling victim to scams involving people claiming to have access to large quantities of tobacco. Many have lost large sums of money to con artists.
Since the COVID-19 lockdown started in South Africa, where authorities in that country banned the sale of tobacco, along with alcohol, crooks have exploited the scarcity of tobacco products to make a quick buck.
Police authorities in Lesotho said they have been warning Basotho about illicit tobacco dealings but people keep falling into the trap of illicit tobacco dealers.
