Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Ministry of Public service with the support of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) is currently holding a three day stakeholder workshop on public service relations in Lesotho which resumed on Monday in Maseru.
In her official opening remarks, the Principal Secretary of this ministry Mrs. ‘Makhoabane Lelimo thanked the ILO for their financial and physical support saying the ILO has equipped Lesotho with unique insights, knowledge and expertise on labour relations issues.
She indicated that it is 58 years ago when Lesotho first committed to protecting workers’ rights by ratifying the freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining, Convention of 1948, which is Convention 87, and the right to organize and collective bargaining, Convention 1949.
She mentioned that these conventions were intended to extend labour rights to all workers though the 1949 Convention, which is the right to organize and collective bargaining, excludes its application to senior government officials involved in the administration of the state.
