ROAD SAFETY LAUNCHES CHRISTMAS CAMPAIGN

Africa-Press – Lesotho. Department of Road Safety will work day and night during the Christmas road safety campaign to be launched on Wednesday in a bid to combat road accidents.

The Principal Road Officer Mr. Setsoto Putsoa told the Agency in an interview that the Christmas road safety campaign, whose theme is “Take action, reduce road accidents” will focus on drunk driving, over speeding and ensuring motorists comply with road regulations.

He said the campaign will be implemented at road accident prone zones based in the districts of Leribe, Berea, Maseru, Mafeteng and Mohale’s Hoek amongst others, saying the department will utilise the alcohol evident centre truck donated earlier by Maluti Mountain Brewery to combat drunk driving.

He added that they will be seen at inroads within villages as they have learnt that motorists drive recklessly and that parents lend unlicensed children their vehicles thus causing accidents.

“Our aim is to achieve a goal of zero traffic fatalities and injuries” he stressed.

Meanwhile, a report from the Department of Road Safety indicates that at least 38 people died in road accidents over Christmas holidays in 2024, adding that 226 injuries were reported and that the overall number of accidents was 399.

It also indicates that most offences were pertaining to over speeding in that campaign.
