Africa-Press – Lesotho. Al-Nassr and Cristiano Ronaldo have agreed to a new two-year contract that will keep Ronaldo with the Saudi Pro League team until after he turns forty-two.
The 40-year-old Portugal captain left Manchester United under bitter circumstances and joined the Riyadh-based squad in December 2022.
There had been rumours that he may leave when his previous contract with Al-Nassr expired at the end of June, but that has already been cancelled.
In a post on X, Ronaldo wrote: “A new chapter begins. Same passion, same dream. Let’s make history together.”
Despite not adding to their nine domestic championships while Ronaldo was at the club, Al-Nassr has profited from the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s prolific goal scoring.
Last season, Ronaldo led the league in scoring for the second straight season with 35 goals in 41 games across all competitions.
With 111 games overall, he has scored 99 goals for Al-Nassr and is on track to achieve 1,000 senior goals in his career.
He currently has 938 goals for both club and country.
A little more than two weeks after assisting Portugal in winning the Uefa Nations League, the former forward for Manchester United, Real Madrid, Sporting, and Juventus is now most likely aiming for a sixth World Cup berth the following summer.
Ronaldo said “the chapter is over” on social media just a month ago. That followed the conclusion of the Saudi Pro League, in which Al-Nassr once again finished third and without a trophy.
” The remark fanned speculation that Ronaldo was prepared to leave the league, where he reportedly earned £177 million a year upon joining, making him the highest-paid player in football history.
Following Al-Nassr’s failure to qualify for the extended competition being held in the United States, FIFA President Gianni Infantino hinted that Ronaldo would join a team participating in the Club World Cup.
Ronaldo said that he had declined offers from participating teams.
There seems to be no chance that Ronaldo will ever return to play at the top level in Europe given his commitment to stay until at least 2027, which is sure to be extremely profitable.
