Africa-Press – Lesotho. Lesotho received Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) from the Rotary Club of Maloti to be handed to the Lesotho media, which “plays an essential role in the frontline to curb the spread of Covid-19 pandemic”.
The Club donated 40 2.5 Litres of bottles of hand sanitizers and 2000 boxes of face masks. Delivering their intent at the handover event held at MISA Lesotho premises on Thursday, the President of the
Rotary Club of Maloti Yande Sikazwe Mothae said she recently read an article where the Government of Lesotho said the next people to be vaccinated after the
health workers are the media practitioners, which emphasized their importance during this pandemic. She furthered that when the world was hit by the Covid-19
pandemic, all people were to stay at home and the media was out there in the mist of danger, risking their lives to ensure that people stay informed. “It is
through media that people were alerted of this monster, when panicking, the media kept them calm, educated about Coronavirus and how to take care of themselves and educated them about the importance of staying home as a way of
combating this monster,” she said. “Therefore we are indeed greatly indebted to the media fraternity. Other than Covid-19, the media is ever ready to be our eyes and ears, to be our watchdogs and to help us make informed
decisions,” Mothae added. She further stated that last year MISA Lesotho launched a media Covid-19 relief fund and said the Rotary Club Lesotho is honoring that call by donating the PPE.
“This must be a small gesture compared to what you do for us, but please accept this token of
appreciation as it was given from the bottom of our hearts. I thank the Chinese Embassy through His Excellency Mr Lei Kezhong who donated the PPE to the Rotary
Club of Maloti, so that we can donate to others in need and a generous donation of sanitizers by our very own District Governor Ms Maud Boikanyo,” Rotary Club
of Maloti President noted. She revealed that so far the club has donated to St. Joseph hospital, National Health Training College (NHTC) and MISA Lesotho.
“Indeed this donation has helped us fulfill our purpose as Rotarians of “Service Above Self” and, therefore we are delighted,” she said. MISA Lesotho Deputy Chairperson
Kananelo Boloetse promised that media practitioners will utilize PPE wisely, knowing and understanding its value so that they can inform other people who
are at risk of Covid-19. “This contribution is worthy; it is going to protect, strengthen and also enlighten the media to publish Covid-19 issues without fear.
This happens at the right time after the formation of the MISA Lesotho Covid-19 relief fund that was found in December last year with the aim to assist media
practitioners as they are frontline workers. The project is aimed to assist media practitioners with their various needs including supply of PPE, lost
jobs, cut salaries and food. It is very crucial that this project was established and I appealed for it to be announced in all media platforms for it to be well
known,” he stated. The Ministry of Communications, Science and Technology Information Director Ramakhula Ramakhula added that the ministry is grateful for the effort made by the Rotary Club of Maloti to assist
the media to fight the Covid-19 pandemic and a show of full support on their commitment to educate the nation on how to protect themselves against the pandemic with the availability of PPE.
