Africa-Press – Lesotho. Things seems to be on the right track for a newly formed Lesotho Rowing Federation (LRF) as now the federation is having at least one official rower, Karabelo Notoane who was recently send to a rowing camp with St.
John’s College at the Witbank Dam, South Africa. The 16 year old Notoane secured the chance for the camp after he was identified during Lesotho National Olympic Committee (LNOC) talent identification talent in June this year.
Rowing federation in Lesotho is still operating under LNOC provisional membership but the federation public relations officer, Rethabile Morake said the future of the sport is promising in the country as he said the Lesotho is one of the countries with enough water, dams and high altitude to boost the sport.
Morake said rowing was identified as a key sport for Lesotho to develop after they learned that the very successful South African rowing team has been using Katse Dam for their high-altitude training.
President of the federation is Litsietsi Mohapeloa who is the owner of Motebong Lodge where South Africa Rowing team trains. Therefore it is said that his dream is to also see Lesotho rowers on the world stage.
“We are looking forwards to make rowing be one of the sports in the country will be proud of in future and now that we have official rower we hope this is the start of good things indicating auspicious steps towards success.
Again we are happy that SA team has shown interest in working with Lesotho team to reach global standards,” mentioned Morake. LNOC Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Morake Raleaka confirmed that they granted the rowing federation a provisional membership as he said the federation is still operating under probation.
On the other hand, Lesotho Sport and Recreation Commission acting CEO, Mofihli Makoele told this paper that they are aware of such federation but they have not received any membership application of the federation.
