Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Employment through the Lesotho Institution of Public Administration and Management (LIPAM) with the assistance of the Commonwealth Secretariat has organised a five-day training on Leadership for senior government officials.

Officially opening the training on Monday in Maseru, the Minister of Public Service, Labour and Employment, Mr. Richard Ramoeletsi said the training came at the right time when the government has just merged ministries for restructuring.

Mr. Ramoeletsi said the world keeps changing towards improved service delivery therefore Lesotho is not an exemption. He disclosed that submitted reports show that there is a need to develop and enhance public service skills towards the improvement of service delivery for the benefit of the nation.

Mr. Ramoeletsi also urged participants to make use of the training to help them acquire skills which will be of greater benefit towards improved service delivery.

In his presentation, the Head Public Sector Governance of the Commonwealth Secretariat, Professor Roger Koranteng said leadership is a vital skill in public administration as a lack of leadership skills hinders the smooth operation of an organisation.

Prof. Koranteng said good leadership skills do not require dictatorship or coercive force but unity, teamwork and willingness to get along with people.

He added the ability to listen is one of the skills that a leader should possess in order to smoothly run an organization. Meanwhile, in an interview with the Agency, the Director-General for LIPAM, Ms.

Nthabiseng Tlhomola said this training is an intervention following the continuous public cry about poor service delivery. Ms. Tlhomola said people in senior positions should be equipped with skills that will help them pass professionalism to their junior officers for better service delivery.

Ms. Tlhomola said the training should be a continuous initiative at least every 3 months and inspections should also be done to improve services. The training is attended by officials from the positions of Deputy Principal Secretaries, Directors and Managers.
