Africa-Press – Lesotho. Senior management of the Lesotho Correctional Services from across the country is expected to convene in Botha-Bothe on Friday to discuss challenges faced in the rehabilitation of inmates.
In an interview, Acting Senior Superintendent Lets’olo Mosoeunyane said the institution is currently grappling with a number of challenges, hence the need for senior officers to come together and find solutions.
He noted that one of the emerging and widespread challenges is the influence of famo gangs within correctional facilities. According to him, prisons across the country now house inmates affiliated with these gangs, which are known to have significant financial resources.
“These gangs have substantial financial means, which they may use to lure correctional officers into engaging in activities that are against regulations. In some cases, they may even attempt to bribe officers to assist inmates in escaping,” he said.
Mosoeunyane added that this and other challenges will be discussed in depth to identify practical solutions.
He further highlighted concerns regarding inmates from the LGBTQI+ community, noting that existing prison facilities are not adequately designed to accommodate them while ensuring their rights are respected.
Additionally, he said the meeting will feature presentations from a social worker and a financial advisor. He explained that such meetings are held quarterly and rotate among districts.
Senior officials expected to attend include the Chief of Corrections, Deputy Chief of Corrections, Senior Assistant Commissioners, and Senior Superintendents from across the country.
