Africa-Press – Lesotho. A 56-year-old Soweto doctor was shot dead in his surgery, a week after gunmen stormed his surgery and robbed patients of their cellphones. Dr George Koboka, who practised in Diepkloof, was on Friday killed by four gunmen who allegedly went straight to his office and shot him dead.
The incident happened just after 14:00. Koboka was rushed to hospital, where he was declared dead. The killers allegedly did not take anything from either the doctor or the patients.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo said: “Police immediately launched a manhunt for the suspects, who were driving in a minibus Toyota Quantum, resulting in three suspects [aged 23, 28 and 33] being arrested in Soweto.
” According to a source, who preferred to remain anonymous, one of the men is originally from KwaZulu-Natal and works as a taxi driver in Gauteng.
The source said it was believed that he was the one who transported the killers to the surgery, and he was also found in possession of the vehicle. The search is still on for one more of the alleged killers.
According to the source, this was not the first time the doctor was attacked. “Last week, four people stormed into the doctor’s surgery and took the cellphones of patients queueing to see the doctor,” the source said.
“It is believed that his killers could be the same people who robbed him and were angry that he had opened a case against them, as nothing was taken when he was killed.
” Masondo confirmed the arrested men might be linked with the business robbery that occurred at Koboka’s surgery on 16 March.
