Africa-Press – Lesotho. Muckraker has been receiving loads of e-mails from internet scammers over the past few months. All are offering her some handsome profits for her small participation in some scheme of sorts.
In early June, she received a message from a Mr David Brown who claimed to be “Fund Management Executive with Royal London Asset Management in England”.
Brown said he wanted Muckraker’s help to transfer GBP£36 000 000 and invest in “properties and other lucrative businesses” in Lesotho. He said all Muckraker had to do was to help transfer the funds, advise on investment areas and help buy the properties.
“If you agree to render your service to me in this regard, 25% of the total sum of GBP£36 000 000 will be for you. Kindly reply and consent to your continued interest to this email address (davbrown90@gmail. com),” Brown said.
“Thank you and God bless, as I wait in anticipation of your reply and cooperation,” he added, before signing off “Sincerely”.
It was a mouth-watering deal because GBP£36 000 000 (M719 841 600). Her 25 percent commission was M179 960 400. Muckraker’s response was polite. “Dear Mr Brown.
Your offer sounds amazing but I must respectfully decline,” she said. “You see, Lesotho is having an election in October and our local billionaire called Bra Sam is contesting.
He has promised to make everyone in Lesotho a millionaire. ” “The brother is loaded. Everyone thinks he will share his money with them. I don’t know if I believe him but I think he will deliver on his promise”.
Mr Brown quickly responded with pleas mixed with a warning. “My Sister, you should not believe politicians. They lie for a living. I am an honest brother offering you a chance to change your life and those of your people.
Let’s work together on this investment and you will not regret it. Leave the politicians because they will disappoint you,” Mr Brown said. Muckraker was impressed and wrote back.
“Mr Brown, I am interested in the deal but you must first prove to me that you are not like one of these many politicians in Lesotho.
Prove that you are not a Lesotho politician pretending to be a con artist,” she said. Mr Brown is yet to bring the proof. Muckraker is not waiting. She will meet some of the Browns on the ballot in October. You get the point.
