Africa-Press – Lesotho. A young couple based in Thabaneng has taken farming to a high level, making a living out of it. Khahliso Seseli and ‘Mabohlokoa Seseli started farming in 2015 in their backyard plots at home, though crops
were not growing well then because of climate change. In an exclusive interview with Informative Newspaper, Khahliso Seseli, also the founder of Leloaleng
Farming, said it was only after they received funding in the form of greenhouse, shade nets and a borehole tap that their business improved since water was their greatest obstacle.
He said this funding did bring the greatest green light to their farm. “We started producing in large quantities and people started coming in large numbers to buy, we supply shops, individuals and
sometimes supermarkets, however, we run out of stock since demand is too high. We crop high valued produce, mainly tomatoes and green paper. We basically do farming
because it has high returns compared to other businesses,” he revealed. The farmer explained that their main challenge is global warming because they face unexpected rains and
hails and long duration of droughts. He also said people used to steal seedlings from their farm. However, he said they now try as much as they can to farm
under greenhouse and shade nets. To extend the business, he said they wish to have five permanent employees (particularly youth). Seseli stated that one of
their greatest achievements is having a free consultation club on Agribusiness. They managed to buy irrigation system that covers 30m by 10m greenhouse, a shad
net and borehole water source. He revealed that last month – December – they won a voucher of M1400 worth on a competition held by Eco-Culture Organization.
Addressing the case of unemployment, the Mafeteng farmer said, “My advice to the youth is for them to indulge in farming, you do not have to hold an educational certificate to make
a living out of farming, Agriculture is natural you can never go wrong with farming especially when you follow appropriate measures. ” Seseli concluded that
their millstone is to have another farm but focusing on animal farming mainly short term animals like chickens. He added that as rains are pouring, they will
be ready to put in cabbage as soon as tomatoes, green paper and potatoes are yielded for winter. He holds a degree in Crop Science and Agriculture while his wife holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting Studies, they both studied at the National University of Lesotho
