Africa-Press – Lesotho. A senior police officer based in Maputsoe is expected to appear before court today for remand after he was caught on Tuesday by the anti-corruption unit receiving a bribe.

The Directorate on Corruption and Economic Offences (DCEO) spokesperson, ’Matlhokomelo Senoko, told thepost yesterday that they were still waiting for instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to charge the top cop.

In terms of the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act 1981, a civil servant or government official cannot be arrested and charged without the approval of the DPP.

“Probably we will take him to court tomorrow,” Senoko said yesterday.

“We were supposed to have gone to court today but we had not yet received directions from the DPP,” she said. Senoko could not name the arrested police officer because, as per the DCEO policy, he had not yet been charged.

However, our sources at the DCEO say the arrested officer is a senior superintendent from Mazenod in Maseru, who was stationed in Maputsoe as the deputy commander.

He was put under watch on suspicion that he was corrupt. It was suspected that he had an unhealthy relationship with a private security company which is said to be owning unlicensed guns. The police officer allegedly received a bribe from an official of the security company.
