Africa-Press – Lesotho. Tele Police Station Commander, Inspector Monaheng Moholaha, has warned Basotho returning from South Africa for the Christmas holidays to cross at Tele legal border post for their safety.
Inspector Moholaha explained that Tele River, is currently full due to ongoing heavy rains, adding that making downstream crossings is dangerous and exposing travellers to the risk of drawing.
He noted that many Basotho attempt to cross illegally at areas such as Tele, Dilli-Dili, Mathole, and Sinxondo, fearing arrest at the legal border as they have overstayed in South Africa or lack passports. However, he assured travellers that no arrests will be made at the legal border, adding that police from both Lesotho and South Africa have been deployed to prevent crime, and protect travellers and their property at the border post.
Tele Police Station Commander also cautioned against using local boats, known as likepe, which are individuals who often rob traveller’s money and belongings.
