UNFPA POSTPONES PARLIAMENTARY CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOP

Africa-Press – Lesotho. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has postponed its three-day capacity building workshop for members of the two Houses of Parliament, which was scheduled to begin on Monday in Maseru.

The Clerk of the National Assembly, Advocate Fine Maema, explained that the postponement was due to poor participation, citing a heavy workload currently facing members of Parliament.

He said that the National Assembly is dealing with a backlog of work and a series of urgent meetings that require the immediate attention of MPs, which in turn affected attendance at the planned workshop.

Meanwhile, the UNFPA Country Representative, Mr. John Mosoti, said the workshop was intended to strengthen the capacity of parliamentarians on key issues affecting Basotho, including gender-based violence, child marriage and maternal health education, among others.

Mr. Mosoti added that the training also aimed to enhance the ability of legislators to engage meaningfully with stakeholders and contribute effectively to policy discussions addressing population and development challenges.

The workshop is however expected to resume on Tuesday with participation from the expected audience.
