Area Technical Officer (ATO) in the Department of Crops at Teyateyaneng, Mr. Pule Mashokolo highlighted that wheat harvesting activities are currently underway in the area.
Mr Mashokolo explained that the harvesting process is progressing well however, heavy rainfall during the rainy season continues to be a major challenge, as it disrupts field operations and delays harvesting in some areas.
He further emphasized that the department is also facing operational challenges, including wheat agricultural fields that are located far apart from each other, making monitoring and coordination difficult.
In addition, Mr. Mashokolo noted an imbalance in farmer participation, with few wheat farmers taking part during the planting season, while many farmers become active during the harvesting period.
Mr. Mashokolo urged farmers to report to their respective ResourceCcentres once they acquire wheat seed, stressing that early reporting would help improve planning and reduce the recurring challenge of having fewer farmers during the planting season and increased numbers during harvesting.
Apart from wheat harvesting, Mr. Mashokolo noted that there is growing interest in vegetable production, with many farmers currently purchasing cabbage seeds in preparation for raising sprouts for the upcoming planting season.
