Africa-Press – Lesotho. Development for Peace Education (DPE) in partnership with SHE HIVE Association and Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) will honor the passing of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela with a memorial service that will be held at the South African High Commission hall.

This is according to a press release issues by DPE as of 20th April 2018. The objective of the memorial service according to the press release is “both to honor Winnie Madikizela-Mandela as an outstanding African Woman whose contribution to the struggle for a free South Africa is both immeasurable and has been mostly obscured.

“We want to acknowledge the struggle that Mrs.

Madikizela-Mandela experienced as a woman who wanted to have as much influence on the policy direction of the African National Congress, and later democratic and non-racial south Africa, as her male counterparts and appropriate this history of struggle for all women across the African continent and in particular, Basotho women” read the press statement.

“Notable” women from politics, government, the private sector, churches, civil society organizations and other sectors have all been invited to the event.

“We have invited them to come share with us their experiences as women with influence as we honour and celebrate the efforts of the late Winnie Madikizela-Mandela,” reads the statement.

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela (born Nomzamo Winifred Zanyiwe Madikizela; 26 September 1936), also known as Winnie Mandela, was a South African anti-apartheid activist and politician, and the ex-wife of an anti-apartheid revolutionary and political leader Nelson Mandela.

She died at the Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg on 2 April 2018 at the age of 81. She was reported to have been suffering from diabetes and had recently undergone several major surgeries.

Her public funeral service was held at Orlando Stadium on 14 April 2018 and was laid to rest at Fourways Memorial Park Cemetery in Johannesburg, Gauteng.
