Africa-Press – Lesotho. Thirty (30) youths from Ha-‘Mapotsane in Mohale’s Hoek district have illegally owned land, claiming that the local chief is allocating land in improper ways.
On March 11, young people from the area met to allocate land in their favorite areas. According to their report, they chose this day because it was a holiday and everyone was there to choose their places.
According to Mohale’s Hoek City Council Chairperson Mr Kutloano Ramalaka, the event was sparked by public outcry that people from faraway places were being given better places by giving ostrich feathers to the king.
He said the problem was exacerbated by the fact that the king did not want to give up his non-existent job of allocating land belonging to Local Government candidates where he was looking for bribes.
Ramalaka pointed out that there would be disputes where the king would cut the people where they had already been sold. He also pointed out that the matter was referred to the police who advised them to work together to resolve the issues.
“I will work hard to protect these young people so that justice can be done and land allocation is free from the costs required at this stage where they are being discriminated against.
This situation is a long one and we are calling for justice to be done, ”he said. The King of Ha-‘Mapotsane, Mr. Jerafanteng Malebanye, in his defense of the issue, said he did not consider land allocation a joke because no one can own land without the consent of anyone.
Malabanye said he had been in a state of crisis for some time and was reluctant to give his opinion and reason for the people under his rule to take such action.
“I consider this community to be out of control and disrespectful of this illegal act,” he said. Malabanye pointed out that the community had never applied for land redistribution and was shocked by the incident.
In an interview with a resident who did not want his name to be announced, he indicated that they ended up owning the land because it came to their notice that the land was acquired by those who gave the king feather feathers.
allocate land. He explained that young people in the area were annoyed that people from other parts of the country were being offered good accommodation and they were given unsatisfactory mountain conditions.
He said they came together to set up land because they saw that their grievances would never be heard as they had followed all the steps of land distribution but were not given what they needed.
