Africa-Press – Liberia. Theresa Cummings, the wife of the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) Standard Bearer Alexander Cummings, says she will focus more on education and health when she becomes Liberia’s First Lady. Madam Cummings made the remark over the weekend when she met with the Ablee-Jay women’s group in Giah Town, Grand Bassa County.
She told the predominantly female audience that she is not a politician, adding, “I am a wife, a mother of two, and a grandmother of five. So, I understand what it is to be a wife, a mother, and taking care of the children and the home,” Madam Cummings said.
She added: “When I am First Lady, my main focus – number one is our children’s education. Next is healthcare. Our people are dying for no reason. There is no medicine in our clinics and hospitals.”
Madam Cummings urged the women to educate their children, adding that the children are the future. “I can tell you that what breaks my heart is to see children on the streets and sidewalks selling – being the breadwinner of their families.”
Madam Cummings also inspired the youths and the women to be hopeful, adding that her husband has a good plan for both the youths and the women of Liberia.
“I can tell you today that my husband’s vision is to create jobs for the youths. His vision for you women is to provide loans so that you can do your business. To the women, it is you who are going to create the jobs because women are the backbone of the economy in Liberia,” Madam Cummings said.
Martha Quingar is an official of the Ablee-Jay Women’s Group. Martha informed Mrs. Cummings about a school they have constructed with their money to educate their children.
She complained about the lack of some basic materials to enhance the learning activities at the school. “What is more concerning to us is that whenever we see a woman, we are there. We women carry the pain. We erected the school building but received no help. We are not working; we sell our market and building the school. Please help the teachers and the school,” she said.
At the end of the interaction with the women, Madam Cummings presented an amount of L$50,000 as her family’s initial contribution to the school.
