Liberia: Cummings Maintains ANC Standard Bearer Post

Africa-Press – Liberia. Thousands of partisans, supporters and sympathizers of the Alternative National Congress (ANC) have again reposed explicit confidence in Alexander Benedict Cummings, endorsing him to continue as the political leader and standard bearer of the party. This now gives Cummings the mantle of authority not only as the face of the institution but the choice of the party to contest for the presidency in the ensuing October 10, 2023 elections.

Led by the National Executive Committee of the party, the partisans reached the unanimous decision at the ANC’s Fifth National Convention, held in the sprawling economic hub of Ganta City, on Friday, May 12, 2023.

Cummings, in brief acceptance remarks, expressed gratitude to partisans, supporters and sympathizers for their continuous commitment to the cause of the party and also the confidence and trust reposed in him to lead the ANC.

He recalled the over seven years of ANC’s political struggle for national leadership, saying that although the party has not succeeded in convincing more Liberians to buy into its vision, the ANC is more resolute than ever before, that it is the best alternative Liberia needs and deserves.

“We have been through more difficult times before, but it is our nature as Liberians to always find a way to pull ourselves up by the bootstrap and overcome our challenges,” Cummings told the hundreds of partisans and supporters who attended the convention in Nimba County.

He added that it is high time that Liberia got liberated from the grips of bad governance, corruption, and patronage.

The ANC standard bearer urged his supporters or partisans to be civil in the electoral process, regardless of any confrontation or temptation that may come their way.

“Be Civil in the manner you are going to campaign and be respectful to your leaders, regardless of our political differences,” he urged his supporters.

Mr. Cummings also warned against corruption, warning prospective representative and senatorial aspirants not to indulge in the acceptance of “brown envelopes” before discharging their constitutional duties.

“You need to be honest in the discharge of their duties as representatives of the people.

“If you think I have to bribe you before you pass a bill or do changes in the constitution, then you will fill in and it will not work in that form,” he said.

The ANC held its convention concomitantly with its political collaborator, Liberty Party, in the city of Ganta.

The twin convention brought delegates from across the country and the diaspora, with Musa Bility presiding over the Liberty Party while Mr. Josiah A. Kennedy presided over the Alternative National Congress convention, respectively.

For the Liberty Party, two of the key executive members, embattled political leader, Nyoblee Karnga-Lawrence, and Vice Chairperson for Political Affairs, A. Darius Dillon, were conspicuously absent from the event.

The ANC also endorsed 73 representative aspirants and 15 senatorial aspirants to be presented to the CPP convention on Saturday, May 13, 2023, where the Liberty is expected to do the same.

However, most of the Liberty Party convention activities were held under close doors, thereby denying access to reporters.

In the overview of the LP convention, Chairman Mr. Musa Bility reiterated that the constitution mandated all political parties to have a national convention once every six years.

He outlined some issues that the convention will be addressing, including the finalization of the procedure that made the Liberty Party to be part of the CPP.

“We are also here to finally give approvals to the Liberty Party constitution which will allow us to finally be at peace with the rules of law and to manage our party in accordance with our own understanding,” Bility said.
