Africa-Press – Liberia. As Liberia approaches the presidential runoff elections on November 14, the political leader of the Liberian People’s Party (LPP), Cllr. Tiawan Gongloe, has officially endorsed the presidential bid of former Vice President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and his Unity (UP). Gongloe, In his endorsement statements, put forth a set of recommendations aimed at promoting justice for all, rule of law, economic growth, and development.
Gongloe, a prominent lawyer and the Standard Bearer of the LPP, announced the party’s decision during a press conference in Monrovia on Wednesday, October 25. He explained that after careful consideration and consultations with party members and supporters, the LPP chose to endorse the UP despite being critical of both the UP and the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) during the campaign period.
Gongloe outlined a ten-point agenda that includes strengthening the rule of law, combating corruption, providing free and quality education, improving the health sector, mechanizing rice production, and maintaining infrastructure. The LPP expects the UP, if elected, to prioritize these areas within their first hundred days in office.
He added that it was difficult to reach this decision because the LPP ran a campaign based on a platform for the transformation of Liberia into a better country.
“Fellow Liberians, partisans, supporters, and well-wishers of Liberia, today we are faced with an extremely difficult choice between two parties that were fiercely criticized by our partisans and supporters at home and abroad. From the broad consultations that we have conducted among our partisans and supporters at home and abroad as well as our conclusion that the party (CDC) in power placed Liberia in a virtual intensive care unit, we hereby declare that our party will support, the only opposition (UP) that was chosen by the Liberian people, to compete with the ruling party, (CDC).”
He emphasized that the LPP also wants the UP to commence quarterly lifestyle audits of officials of government in the Executive Branch, take steps towards the investigation of all sanctioned officials in government with the assistance of the US Government, take steps towards the establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court and increase the budget percentage to begin with mechanized agriculture.
“We hereby place on notice the party that we are declaring support for today, that upon its failure to meet these expectations, we will be the first to condemn and criticize them,” he said as he called on partisans and supporters of the LPP to go out to campaign and vote for the Unity Party and to ensure that the party wins this second round of the 2023 Presidential Elections.
Gbehzohngar Findley Endorses President Weah
Former Foreign Minister Gbehzohngar Milton Findley has announced his full support for President George Manneh Weah’s re-election bid ahead of the upcoming run-off election on November 14. Findley, who is now the Senator-Elect for Grand Bassa County and previously served as President Pro Tempore of the Liberian Senate, made this endorsement on October 25, 2023.
Findley cited his commitment to improving Grand Bassa County as the primary reason for backing President Weah. He emphasized the need to provide electricity, improve healthcare delivery, and advance various developmental projects in the county. He stated, “After extensive consultations with my team, I firmly believe that supporting President George Manneh Weah is crucial for us to bring about progress and growth in our beloved county.”
Findley further expressed his belief that President Weah’s leadership will create numerous job opportunities for Liberians and called on all citizens to rally behind the President during the run-off election. This endorsement carries weight, given Findley’s recent victory in the senatorial elections for Grand Bassa County, which emphasizes his commitment to the region’s progress and prosperity.
It is anticipated that other political actors and parties will also make endorsements or declare their support for either the CDC or the UP in the coming days. However, concerns have been raised regarding the motivations behind these endorsements and the need for political actors to prioritize the interests of Liberia and its citizens over personal interests during negotiations.
Meanwhile, the UP Alliance in a press statement issued Wednesday, October 25, extended warm appreciation to Cllr. Tiawon S. Gongloe, Dr. Emmanuel Yakpawolo, the National Chairman and the entire leadership of the LPP and all its members for the confidence reposed in Amb. Joseph N. Boakai’s ability and capacity to lead Liberia. The UP Alliance also takes cognizance of the policy recommendations made by the LPP for the development of Liberia and will work along with the LPP to ensure that Liberia becomes a better country for all.
“In a bid to solidify the relationship and fully incorporate the LPP within the campaign, the UP Alliance Campaign will immediately engage the leadership of the LPP to begin work as there is no time to waste. Once again, we are grateful to the LPP family,” the statement concluded.
