Africa-Press – Liberia. The Governments of Rwanda and Liberia have signed a Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) on the sidelines of the International Civil Aviation Organization Air Services Negotiations Event (ICAN2024) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The delegation from the Liberia Civil Aviation Authority (LCAA) is headed by Mr. Julius D. Dennis, Jr., Director General, Audrey Zoe Johnson, Director, Air Transport and Economic Regulations and Patrick Okai, Special Assistant/Public Relations Officer.
The agreement aims to facilitate air transport between the two countries, promote tourism, trade, and economic cooperation, and strengthen bilateral relations.
Under the BASA, Rwanda and Liberia will grant each other the right to operate scheduled air services between their territories. This will allow for more direct flights, shorter travel times, and increased connectivity for passengers and cargo, most importantly for students studying in Rwanda and the East African Region.
The agreement also includes provisions for Safety and security. Both countries will work together to ensure the highest aviation safety and security standards.
Economic cooperation: The Bilateral Air Services Agreement will promote economic cooperation by facilitating trade and investment between the two countries.
Tourism: The agreement will boost tourism by making it easier for people to travel between Rwanda and Liberia.
The signing of this agreement marks a significant milestone in strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries and facilitating air connectivity between Liberia and Rwanda.
The BASA will provide a legal framework for the establishment and operation of direct air services between the two nations, promoting trade, tourism, and cultural exchange. It will also enable airlines from both countries to operate scheduled air services between designated points in their respective territories, subject to the terms and conditions outlined in the agreement.
This will offer travelers more convenient and affordable options for travel between the two countries.
The signing of the BASA is a testament to Liberia and Rwanda’s commitment to fostering stronger economic and diplomatic ties. It is expected to contribute to both countries’ growth and development by promoting tourism, trade, and investment.
At the signing ceremony, the Director General of the Liberia Civil Aviation Authority, Mr. Julius Dennis, Jr., remarked, “We are very excited and elated about this collaboration, which indeed will provide alternatives for our traveling public, especially students studying in Rwanda and the East African Region.”
