Africa-Press – Liberia. The Acting Managing Director of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), Mohammed Sherif, is making a strong case for expanding electricity access in Liberia at the ongoing Spring Meetings of the World Bank Group.
In a strategic meeting with representatives of the Saudi Fund, Mr. Sherif emphasized that while five substations under the CLSG Interconnection Project have been completed, four remain unconnected to the national grid. He highlighted the need for the Liberian government to leverage these substations to significantly boost power supply across the country.
Mr. Sherif noted that the 535-kilometre stretch of the CLSG line within Liberia forms the backbone of the nationโs transmission infrastructure and presents a transformative opportunity to extend electricity to underserved areas.
To this end, he proposed a phased approach to grid expansion, jointly implemented by the LEC and the Government of Liberia. The first phase would focus on activating the Botota substation in Bong County, enabling grid connection from Bong to Zorzor and Voinjama, with future extensions to Liberiaโs remote southeastern corridor.
The Saudi Fund delegation warmly welcomed the proposal, expressing strong interest in supporting the initiative. They encouraged the Ministry of Finance and the LEC to submit a formal funding application along with the necessary technical studies without delay.
The delegation reaffirmed the Saudi Fundโs commitment to promoting inclusive and sustainable electricity access throughout Liberia.
