LEC files updated tariff proposal with LERC

Africa-Press – Liberia. The Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC) has announced the official submission of a new electricity tariff proposal by the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), marking a critical step in determining power rates for the 2026–2028 period.

In accordance with Section 8.1(2) of the 2015 Electricity Law of Liberia, which states that “a licensee may not charge a customer any other tariff other than that determined or approved by the Regulator”, LEC is required to obtain LERC’s approval before implementing any changes in electricity pricing.

The current proposal, submitted on September 30, 2025, outlines updated tariffs to take effect from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2028.

LEC’s journey toward this final submission began in December 2024, when the Interim Management Team (IMT) requested to withdraw a prior tariff application due to internal transitions. The IMT cited unfamiliarity with the tariff process as a reason for the withdrawal, and LERC granted the request with a new deadline set for February 15, 2025.

LEC submitted a revised proposal on March 10, 2025. From then until May 9, 2025, LERC’s Tariff Review Team worked closely with the utility to collect all necessary data and documentation.

However, in a subsequent development, LEC’s new management requested another withdrawal on July 4, 2025, seeking more time to realign the tariff proposal with its updated strategic plan and capital investment projections. The Commission once again granted the request, setting a final resubmission deadline.

That final proposal was officially submitted on September 30, 2025. Following the submission, LERC conducted an initial assessment and requested supplementary documents, which LEC has now provided in full.

LERC is now preparing to launch the next phase of the review process, which includes public hearings, stakeholder engagements, and community outreach initiatives. These sessions are designed to gather feedback from electricity consumers, policymakers, and other stakeholders before any final decisions are made.

“The Commission is committed to ensuring transparency and regulatory best practices throughout the tariff-setting process,” said Claude J. Katta, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners.

LEC currently operates in Montserrado, Grand Cape Mount, Bomi, Rivercess, Grand Bassa, and Margibi counties.
