CBL Governor Assumes Chairmanship of WAMZ

Africa-Press – Liberia. The Executive Governor of the Central Bank of Liberia, Mr. Henry F. Saamoi, has officially assumed the Chairmanship of the Committee of Governors of the West African Monetary Zone (WAMZ), pledging to deepen regional monetary cooperation and strengthen the collective drive toward a unified West African monetary system.

Speaking during his acceptance remarks, Governor Saamoi expressed profound humility at the confidence reposed in him and reaffirmed Liberiaâ€TMs commitment to advancing economic integration, financial stability, and shared prosperity across the sub-region.

Governor Saamoi underscored that assuming this role comes at a time of persistent global uncertainty—marked by inflationary pressures, financial market volatility, and external shocks—making coordinated regional action more urgent than ever.

Emphasizing the intrinsic value of unity, he quoted Kwame Nkrumah. He reminded member states that the success of WAMZ rests on collective determination to transcend national borders in pursuit of a common economic destiny.

He highlighted priority areas under his chairmanship, including strengthening monetary cooperation and convergence, promoting financial‑sector stability through sound regulation and innovation, supporting regional integration to boost trade and investment, and championing capacity‑building to ensure that institutions across the Zone remain agile and future-ready.

He pledged leadership rooted in dialogue, consensus‑building, and an unwavering commitment to the ECOWAS Monetary Cooperation Programme and the Single Currency Roadmap.

The Governor also acknowledged the scale of the task ahead—ranging from technological disruptions to the need for sustainable development—and called on member states to convert challenges into opportunities for deeper regional transformation.

He encouraged policymakers to harness digital technologies, strengthen cross-border payment systems, and ensure that monetary cooperation delivers tangible benefits for ordinary citizens across West Africa.

Reflecting Liberiaâ€TMs people-centered development philosophy, Governor Saamoi urged the Committee to prioritize decisions that directly support socio-economic empowerment, stressing that credibility, pragmatism, and forward-looking action must guide the regionâ€TMs journey toward monetary union.

He reaffirmed that with unity of purpose and sustained collaboration, the WAMZ can continue to be a beacon of regional integration, resilience, and progress. http://
