LAC/UMC Asserts Legal Authority Over Ganta Mission

Africa-Press – Liberia. The Liberia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church (LAC/UMC) says it welcomes the decision of Justice in Chambers, His Honor Yussif D. Kaba, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court lifting of the “Stay Order” initially sought by the UMC against the Global Methodist Church (GMC) concerning the use of UMC properties at the Ganta United Methodist Mission in Nimba County.

In a Press statement issued by LAC/UMC on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, the Church noted that the lifting of the prohibition does not confer any property rights, ownership claims, or legal authority on the GMC or its associates over United Methodist Church properties in Gompa District, Ganta, Nimba County.

The LAC/ UMC continues that the Justice in Chambers decision does not affect the Declaratory Judgment case currently on appeal before the Supreme Court. That matter, according to the LAC/UMC, remains pending and subject to final judicial determination.

The Church maintains that the Ganta United Methodist Mission properties belong to the United Methodist Church in Liberia and remain under its lawful ownership and authority.

It further reiterates that all individuals or institutions wishing to use the UMC Ganta Mission Station facilities must obtain express permission from the UMC through its Mission Stations Executives, the District Superintendent Rev. Patrick Z. Luogon, and Bro. Benedict Domah, or through its Central Office in Monrovia.

“Any use of the facilities without approval from UMC leadership constitutes a violation of the initial Declaratory Judgment granted by the Civil Law Court in favor of the UMC,” the church said in its statement signed by Bro. Edwin Benson, Jr Communication Director, LAC/UMC

The Church also makes clear that it is actively exploring all additional legal options available to its counsel to prevent the illegal use or occupation of its facilities in Gompa District, Nimba County.

“As a law-abiding institution, the United Methodist Church remains committed to respecting the rule of law and pursuing all remedies within Liberia’s legal framework. The Church continues to seek an amicable resolution grounded in justice, order, and protection of its property rights,” the statement added.

It can be recalled that when the UMC petitioned the Court for a “Stay Order” through a Writ of Prohibition, a conference between the parties was originally scheduled for March 3, 2026. The UMC Legal Team was surprised to learn that Justice in Chambers, His Honor Yussif D. Kaba, advanced the matter to Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at which time it was heard with all parties present.

The Justice declined to issue the Writ and subsequently lifted the “Stay Order” imposed.

However, the church reiterated its stand that the lifting of the prohibition does not confer property rights, ownership claims, or legal authority to the GMC or its associates.
