Maifrance Solar's Linsay K.N. Smith: Liberia's First Female CEO

Africa-Press – Liberia. Maifrance Solar Limited has announced a landmark leadership transition, as founder James K. Smith hands over the reins to his wife, Linsay K.N. Smith.

This historic development positions Linsay as the first woman to lead a solar energy company in Liberia—a move advocates say could help reshape the industry’s business landscape.

Founded in April 2023, Maifrance Solar has focused on expanding access to clean, reliable energy in rural and underserved communities.

Under James Smith’s leadership, the company has grown from a fledgling startup into a key provider of solar home systems, mini-grids and solar-powered freezer units for off-grid areas.

In a message to staff on Tuesday, Mr. Smith revealed that the transition had been in the works for several months, underscoring Linsay’s long-standing involvement in the company’s growth.

“Linsay has been part of every critical decision since the beginning. It’s time her name is on the door,” he said.

Linsay Smith, who previously served as chief operating officer, assumes the role of CEO at a time of significant expansion for the company.

Maifrance Solar currently supplies power to numerous rural communities and has launched a pilot program introducing solar-powered cookers in schools across Nimba, Sinoe and Grand Gedeh Counties.

Her appointment has been widely welcomed by business leaders and gender equality advocates.

With women holding only about 20 percent of senior management positions in Liberian companies—according to World Bank data—Smith’s elevation is being hailed as a meaningful milestone in the energy sector.

“Representation matters, especially in the clean energy industry where women are both underserved and essential,” one advocate noted.
