Africa-Press – Liberia. The Government of Liberia has announced that over 10,000 homes in Lofa County will soon benefit from a new solar power project being implemented by the Rural and Renewable Energy Agency (RREA).

At a press briefing on Tuesday, Information Minister Jerolinmek Matthew Piah revealed that the project will feature a 9.35 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system, a 1.6 megawatt diesel power plant, and more than 350 kilometers of low and medium voltage transmission lines.

The electricity generated is expected to serve households and businesses in Voinjama, Kolahun, Foya, and surrounding villages—reaching an estimated 10,000 homes and at least 50,000 residents.

Minister Piah noted that a government delegation recently traveled to Lofa County to assess the progress and quality of work on the project. According to project managers, the diesel generators are 98 percent complete and awaiting fuel supply for testing. The government has contributed US$500,000 toward the initiative.

Piah further disclosed that construction of the 350 kilometers of transmission lines has been completed, and the system is on track to be officially commissioned by the President on July 26 this year.
