Africa-Press – Liberia. The legislators have stated that several legislations before them are time-sensitive and integrity-related, coupled with the government’s submission of a draft Recast Budget.
In consonance with Article 32(b) of the Liberian Constitution, members of the 55th Legislature have signed a certificate to reconvene the second special session of the Legislature.
The certificate mandates both Houses of the Legislature to reconvene its special session beginning Thursday, August 29, 2024, and end on Thursday, September 19, 2024.
The lawmakers said they have acknowledged that several legislations are time-sensitive and have integrity, coupled with submitting a draft Recast Budget.
According to them, these instruments demand the urgent attention of the Legislature.
Due to these concerns, they affixed their signatures in line with Article 32 (b) of the Constitution of the Republic of Liberia to reconvene for the second session commencing Thursday, August 29, 2024.
Article 32 (b) of the Constitution states that the President shall, on his or her initiative or upon receipt of a certificate signed by at least one-fourth of the total membership of each house and proclamation, extend a regular session of the Legislature.
The provision allows the extension to go beyond the date for adjournment or call a special, extraordinary session of that body to discuss or act upon matters of national emergencies and concerns.
When the extension or call is at the Legislature’s request, the provision notes that the proclamation shall be issued no later than forty-eight hours after the President receives the certificate.
The reconvening of the Legislature is intended for members of the body to cut short their constitutional break, which commenced on July 20, 2024, and is due to end on October 11, 2024.
