Africa-Press – Liberia. ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) has officially launched a Free Community Health Outreach in Nimba County, targeting communities directly affected by its mining operations as part of its corporate social responsibility efforts.
The ongoing outreach is benefiting residents of Gbapa and Bonalah, two communities within AML’s operational area. Large crowds turned out to access the free medical services, with residents from surrounding towns and villages also traveling to the outreach sites for treatment.
Healthcare workers from the Ministry of Health, partnering with ArcelorMittal Liberia, were warmly received by community members who expressed appreciation for the life-saving services being provided.
Speaking ahead of the commencement of the exercise, Mr. Lee T. Dammo, County Clinical Supervisor I for Nimba County, underscored the collaborative nature of the initiative.
“This initiative is being provided by ArcelorMittal Liberia with the full involvement of the Ministry of Health; that is why you see us here today,” Dammo said. “AML supplied all the necessary medications but required medical professionals to administer them—hence our presence.”
On behalf of the beneficiaries, Hon. Matthew Dolo, Clan Chief of Gbapa Clan and Acting Paramount Chief of Gbei Chiefdom in the Yarmein Administrative District, expressed heartfelt gratitude to both ArcelorMittal Liberia and the Government of Liberia.
“I want to say thank you to AML and the Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Health, for this opportunity,” Chief Dolo said. “We appeal to the company to work with the community to complete this clinic project so it can be fully opened and serve our people.”
Beneficiaries across all age groups—including pregnant women, nursing mothers, and elderly residents—praised the company for bringing healthcare services directly to their communities, describing the outreach as timely and impactful.
An elderly woman who benefited from the program, speaking in the Mano dialect, expressed joy over the initiative. Translated into English, she said: “I am happy that the ArcelorMittal Liberia people came here today. My heart is happy. I want them to be here every day.”
Community members said the outreach has significantly eased healthcare challenges in the area and called on ArcelorMittal Liberia to sustain and expand similar health initiatives to other mining-affected communities across Nimba County.
