Chinese Embassy Donates Maternal Health Equipment to Liberia

Africa-Press – Liberia. In a significant move to bolster Liberia’s healthcare system, particularly in the area of maternal and neonatal health, the Chinese Embassy has donated a consignment of essential medical equipment to the Ministry of Health.

The donation, which includes 22 delivery beds, 33 baby cradles, and 15 infant warmers, was officially handed over at a ceremony held at the Ministry’s headquarters in Congo Town on September 15, 2025. The event brought together senior officials from both the Ministry of Health and the Chinese Embassy

Chinese Ambassador to Liberia, H.E. Yin Chengwu, said the donation is a testament to China’s ongoing support for Liberia’s development and a concrete outcome of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

“This constitutes a concrete measure to implement the outcomes of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation,” Ambassador Chengwu said. “We hope for further deepening cooperation with the Liberian side in the health sector.”

He emphasized that the donated equipment is intended to enhance maternal and child health services, particularly in Liberia’s remote and underserved areas

“This medical equipment will be allocated to health facilities in various remote areas across the country, helping to provide a safer delivery environment for mothers and safeguarding the health of newborns,” he noted.

Ambassador Chengwu further reaffirmed China’s commitment to working with Liberia to address healthcare challenges and contribute to the building of a global community of health for all.

“In Liberia, the health sector is confronting many challenges, one of which is maternal and child health. President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has prioritized health in his national development agenda, and as a partner, China is committed to supporting these efforts,” he said.

Receiving the items, Liberia’s Minister of Health, Dr. Louise Mapleh Kpoto, expressed deep appreciation for China’s consistent support to the country’s health sector. She said the donation aligns with the Ministry’s goal to improve maternal and child healthcare, especially in rural areas.

“This medical equipment will be provided to health facilities that need them most. Thank you very much for these delivery beds, baby cradles, and infant warmers — they are truly needed,” Dr. Kpoto said.

She added that the equipment would significantly improve the Ministry’s capacity to provide quality maternal and neonatal care and help reduce preventable deaths.

“We are on a journey to improve service delivery, and these items are not just materials — they will have a positive and life-saving impact on our health system,” she emphasized.

Dr. Kpoto also praised Ambassador Chengwu for his proactive and supportive approach, noting his responsiveness to the Ministry’s needs.

“You’re always there when we call upon you. Sometimes you even call to ask how you can assist us. That level of cooperation is something we’re extremely grateful for,” she said.

The Ministry says the equipment will soon be distributed to targeted health facilities in the most underserved regions, in line with President Boakai’s commitment to ensuring equitable healthcare access for all Liberians.

The donation marks another milestone in the growing partnership between Liberia and the People’s Republic of China, especially in strengthening Liberia’s healthcare delivery system and reducing maternal and child mortality.
