The Armed Forces of Liberia and the Ministry of National Defense have concluded a two-day technical training workshop aimed at addressing public waste and strengthening defense governance and the reform process for economic growth and sustainability.
The initiative, held from September 11-12, 2024, in the Ministry of National Defense Conference Room at the BTC Barrack in Monrovia, was witnessed by several international speakers, heads of ministries, and agencies.
The workshop’s theme was “Strengthening the Defense Governance and Reform Processes for Growth and Sustainability.”
It was meant to address government waste by enlightening participants’ minds on government procurement procedures, among others.
Speaking Thursday, September 12, at the exercise’s close, the Minister of Defense, Retired Brigadier General Geraldine J. George, said participants learned the best way to correct mistakes made in previous administrations.
“Go back to your offices and correct those mistakes that have been made, do not continue in those errors,” she urged participants.
The defense minister also told the participants to apply knowledge gained from the workshop in their day-to-day activities.
The first female Defense Minister of Liberia said more changes effected reflect on attitude of people.
Deputy Defense Minister for Administration, Dr. Augustine Larmin applauded facilitators for sharing their experiences, noting that the workshop was meant to enhance government’s productivity.
He noted that in the past, the government has had many challenges related to technicians and expectations in various sectors.
“If there are more technicians and experts in the government, the government will be able to avoid waste and think positively. To think positively, you must be driven by positive goals and objectives,” he stated.
AFL Deputy Chief of Staff, Colonel Anto Theophilus Dana Jr., said the workshop will help men and women in the army understand budgeting, procurement, and the LACC procedure.
He asked the organizers to organize more such activities that would help the Armed Forces of Liberia understand the operations of the government.
