Africa-Press – Liberia. Liberia’s women’s football champions, Determined Girls FC, secured a 2-1 victory against Gambian side Red Scorpion in their opening match of the CAF Women’s Champions League qualifier at the Southern Arena in Bo City.

Goals from Mbassey Darboe in the 28th minute and Bountou Sylla in the 34th minute ensured Liberia’s Upper League Champions marked a strong start in the WAFU Zone A qualifier. A goalkeeping error from Ghanaian Mary Niaquaye led to Red Scorpion’s lone goal.

Participating in their third successive qualification in the tournament, Determine Girls showcased their dominance against Gambian debutant, Red Scorpion. Jessica Quachie and Mabinty Camara were instrumental in controlling the midfield, effectively neutralizing their opponents and contributing significantly to the team’s overall performance.

Liberia’s champions secured the opener through a well-executed play involving a series of passes down the channels, culminating in Darboe finding the net in the 28th minute. The goal set the pace for increased confidence among the players. Six minutes later, Determine Girls doubled their lead through Sylla, much to the delight of club president Grace Weah and co-owner Cassell Kuoh, who had promised a US$10,000 winning bonus, adding extra motivation for the team.

Red Scorpion pulled one goal back in added time of the first half with a brilliant strike from outside the area. Determine Girls’ goalkeeper Niaquaye made a blunder by erroneously palming the ball into her own goal before trying to prevent it, but the referee awarded the goal.

Liberia’s representative came back from the interval with renewed determination as head coach Patience Gwah deployed effective tactical instructions that the players followed diligently. Louise Brown was particularly impressive, showcasing why she is a trusted player. Quachie, who won the Woman of the Match award, was unstoppable and delivered an outstanding performance.
