Eric Wlea Giko Announces 2029 Maryland County Bid

Africa-Press – Liberia. Eric Wlea Giko has officially declared his candidacy for the 2029 senatorial elections in Maryland County, becoming the first individual to publicly announce his intention to contest in the upcoming race.

The announcement was made during a press conference held at his county office in Pleebo City, following a citizens’ petition submitted on August 25, 2025.

The petition came from residents of Harper, Pleebo, Karluway, and Barrobo Statutory Districts, urging Mr. Giko to re-enter the political arena after two previous unsuccessful campaigns.

Although he was not present when the petition was delivered, Mr. Giko said the message from citizens was clear and could not be ignored. He formally accepted the petition, stating that his decision was based on public demand and a renewed call to serve.

“Today, I am honored to respond: Yes — I accept your petition. I will contest,” he announced. “This is not a declaration of victory. It is a declaration of commitment.”

Mr. Giko previously contested legislative seats in 2020 and 2023 but did not win. Despite the electoral losses, he stated that he remained active in community affairs and consistently maintained that he would only run again if requested by the people themselves.

He described the petition not merely as political support but as a call for effective leadership and genuine representation. He pledged to focus on development priorities including healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, education, sanitation, and youth empowerment.

“I have always maintained that I would never contest any election in this county unless called by the people themselves. You have called — and I am ready to serve,” he said. “Not with promises of perfection, but with dedication, transparency, and a deep love for this land we all call home.”

Mr. Giko expressed appreciation to the citizens who organized and signed the petition. He commended their efforts and commitment to what he called a shared vision for a better Maryland County.

“This is not about me — it’s about us. It’s about the future we all want to see for our children and our communities,” he stated. “Let us unite. Let us organize. Let us strategize — and together, let us make it happen.”

He signed the official acceptance document in the presence of journalists and supporters to validate his commitment to the race.

With this declaration, Eric Wlea Giko becomes the first confirmed aspirant for the 2029 senatorial elections in Maryland County, re-entering the political scene with grassroots support following two earlier defeats.
